Collaboration at the Crossroads: Collaboration Technology Convergence

Abstract

In this report, we develop a description of the collaboration suite. Other research reports are more focused on the segments, and surely, that is important. But at ChainLink, we have always been more focused on the questions: What do I use this for? What problems does it solve? What is a complete solution?

Our connected world is communicating and sharing. Global business processes, as well as local teams, need methods and technologies to enhance their ability to develop their ideas and take them to successful completion, whether making movies or medicine. Whether making the latest fashion runway hits, designing new buildings, managing global supply chains, or facilitating remote education and diagnostics, we need to collaborate.

The technology market is going through profound changes in 2011 fueled by technological innovation and convergences. Touch technology and mobility, unified communications, and continuing growth in bandwidth have made the ability to share rich content and work in remote, but meaningful and productive work units, a reality.

In addition, companies are seeking out new productivity and growth tools. They have weathered the economic downturn, cut costs, outsourced, and generally rationalized their business models. In our recent research, we have seen the priorities for companies this year. They have, currently, cash to spend on technology—our estimate of ~ 7% growth in IT spend for 2011—and will use that spend to further growth and productivity, engage in new markets, and develop new products.

But in contemplating the ability to collaborate, organizations and process teams must have a more multidimensional set of capabilities to deal with all the nuances involved in human communications if they want to be successful. Thus a suite is probably required. Content—documents, meetings, verbal and visual communication, teaming and tracking how ideas and content evolve, plus core business applications, are required components of this suite.

In this report, we will develop a description of the collaboration suite. Other research reports are more focused on the segments, and surely, that is important. But at ChainLink, we have always been more focused on the questions: What do I use this for? What problems does it solve? What is a complete solution?
